The alarm went off at 5:00am, for the first time in a long time the Uber was arriving at 6:00am and I would be embarking on my first solo pandemic airline trip. I was simultaneously excited and nervous. I had my sanitizer, wipes, KN95 masks. Perhaps you’ve been there? Ready to go back out into the new abnormal and if you are honest also a little nervous.

They call it FOGO. Fear of Going Out. I didn’t even know it was a thing. Not sure that I like that it is a thing, and it is.

Have you heard of FONO – Fear of Normal? While not formal psychological diagnosis, they are social diagnosis. They are just as real as any formal diagnosis.

FOGO may look different for you. It could be going to the office, grocery store or post office. No matter what may be for you. Once I heard of this social condition I felt better knowing that I was not alone. That is my hope for you, my loyal readers. That we can connect in a mindful way. Know you are not alone and we hear you. Let’s be present for and with one another.

After working and speaking for a convention in Mexico I sat at the airport with a negative COVID test in hand with my airline ticket. I want to share the tips I took to embark on that back to work, non-zoom trip. Here are the things that I did to walk thru FOGO:

Feel the feels – Go forward anyway

Talk it out with a trusted friend, doctor, coach or mentor

Visualize what you want to have happen

If you are a regular reader of the newsletter you know I will always tell it straight. To navigate the feels. We are all going through a lot right now. It is what it is and we have to feel it out and talk it out. Give yourself permission to ask yourself each day – How am I feeling? Don’t judge the response. Simply feel it. Then ask yourself if what you are feeling is in fact what you want to feel. Get out of autopilot. If you want to feel better, choose better. I started feeling scared and swapped that out for the feeling of success.

Next find a trusted friend, counselor or coach and talk it out. Our heart hears our voice; it’s not always enough to think about all the changes we have been navigating. Talk it out. My fall coaching program is a great way to start.

As I got honest with myself I realized that I am ready for navigating the new abnormal. I started to visualize myself walking confidently into the airport, enjoying the connections from sharing mindfulness on stage and easily making my way back to the US. What you visualize you actualize. The best athletes visualize making the winning shot before a big game. You must visualize your new pandemic living abnormal.

Mindfulness is no longer a nice to have skill for the workplace, it’s a must have tool for success navigating wherever you and your team are in FOGO and FONO.

Thank you all for your participation in our Fall/Winter survey. We value your feedback and are using it to build keynotes, workshops and 5-day challenges. My late 2021 and 2022 speaking and coaching schedule is booking now. Let’s find a way to work together.
